About Me

Sam Carr (b.1998) graduated in the Class of 2021 with a First BMus (Hons) in Composition from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Sam enjoys experimenting with multimedia art in unusual performance settings, as well as creating scores that are accessible to musicians of a variety of skill level.
Sam’s work is often influenced by algorithms, nature, and the human body – generally stemming from a minute or conceptual stimulus. Her work developed dramatically after collaborating and workshopping with
CoMA London in 2019 where her piece Between Doors was premiered at Blackheath Halls in March 2019 – this piece was performed again by the Apollo Consort in November 2019. Being introduced to open scoring, indeterminacy, and stopwatches encouraged a different perspective of exploration – predominantly in notation and texture.
In 2020, Sam collaborated with video artist
Michèle Saint-Michel where she designed and created the audio for her film
Inhale, which was part of a Multi-Screen Digital Film Installation with partner film
Exhale – scored by Sophie Stone. These films were screened in the House of Beautiful Business’s The Great Wave Festival in October, and broadcast in June 2021 by The Menteur in their Art Rewired event.
Throughout her time studying at Trinity Laban, Sam wrote for numerous TL ensembles including their Wind Ensemble (Double Wind Quintet), Shapeshifter Ensemble (60-piece Orchestra), Contemporary Music Group (Chamber Ensemble). Before her time at Trinity Laban, Sam was part of the
Martin Read Foundation’s Young Composers’ Scheme in 2017 where her piece Winter’s Omega was performed by the Broncano-Mnich Duo.
Since graduating, Sam works in the events industry as a Sound, Light & AV Engineer – in live, virtual, and hybrid settings.
